NICK COVERED the rest of his chicken and pasta with the plastic lid and set the tray out in the hall for pickup. He’d been so strung out last night from sexual tension that he hadn’t asked Serena what time she’d be back tonight. And he damn sure didn’t want to miss her by going down to the restaurant, so he’d ordered room service.

He ducked into the bathroom and brushed his teeth. He was all kinds of a fool to be so torqued about seeing her this evening.

What he should do was make sure he was conspicuously absent when she showed up tonight, steer clear of her for the next couple of days. When he’d won his bet, he’d find and cozy up to a woman who didn’t destroy his composure.

The problem was, he didn’t want just any woman. He wanted Serena.

If he didn’t do the smart thing and run screaming in the other direction, as soon as he’d won his bet, he should sleep with her and then be on his merry way.

The very last thing he should do, the least intelligent choice, the decision that bordered on lunacy, would be to go along with her, to pretend he had some crazy intimacy issues just as a way to spend time with her. However, his alter ego argued, he’d tried to convince her he wasn’t sexually dysfunctional and had gotten nowhere, so why not roll with it? And it undisputedly opened the door to more intimate conversation. He was curious about what was inside her head.

He’d never felt this way before—supercharged, energized, edgy, consumed by a woman. That analogy fit. Thoughts of Serena had consumed him today.

He checked his watch. He really should have pinned her down to a time. It had been late when she’d arrived last night. That had been quite a surprise, waking up and finding her in his room with those incredible boots and those legs. He smiled at the thought. What a bizarre turn of events.

Something odd about last evening—odder than having a woman turn up in his room uninvited—niggled again at the back of his mind. He’d been asleep when she’d woken him, but it was an oddity in the sequencing that bothered him. The click of the lock had awakened him and there she stood. The click of the lock…then she was there…The thing that didn’t belong, well, rather, the thing that belonged but was absent suddenly struck him. What about the light from the hall? Illumination from the hallway should have followed the lock’s click. And she should have been facing him. But she’d been facing the door, hadn’t she? So, that would mean…

A knock at the door interrupted his thoughts. Anticipation raced through him, set his heart thumping a little harder. Everything was so mixed up—most of all him. He crossed the room and checked his appearance in the mirror, suddenly nervous and unsure of himself. He hadn’t known what to wear for an unnecessary sexual intervention. He’d kept on his shirt and slacks, but lost his tie from earlier today.
